Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 2006 Vintage) Showing up here in its usual full-bodied, highly ripened stance, Shafer's Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay is one again big and somewhat blustery with ripe apple fruit notes and lots and lots of rich oak in tow. It is a little bit tighter at the back end than has been the norm but that extra energy will allow the wine to be a good partner to savory fish dishes, as well as to a wide variety of chicken and smoked meat dishes.

It delivers plenty of fruit and a full complement of sweet oak with palate-coating viscosity and no small measure of heat as the price of its considerable richness. It is kept on course by its fine sense of balance all the same, and, if not a wine for drinking with delicate foods, it will fill the bill nicely when the menu calls for something extra.
