(From 1999 Vintage) Opus One is known for it's exquisite texture, and the 1999 vintage is no exception. The wine shows aromas of cassis, cloves and roasted almonds against a creamy texture of soft tannins and round, rich fruit. Offering flavors of plum, cherry and black pepper, the 1999 will be charming in it's youth and expressive at maturity.
Opus One thinned the 2002 vintage to the lowest per-acre yield in a decade, encouraging quality and concentration of flavors. The 2002 Opus One shows aromas of dried strawberry, vanilla bean and mocha with flavors of cassis, black cherry, plum and espresso. Offering a lean, vibrant entry with profound mid-palate density, the wine finishes with bittersweet chocolate and a hint of smoke.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 1998 Vintage) A very pleasant wine to be sure, this one wins the day with its ripe cherry and proper cassis aromas buttressed by pushy oak. A supple rounded entry leads to medium-depth, balanced, slightly tannin-toughened flavors, and, once again, oak accents fill out the small gaps in its young fruit. If rising above the vintage in both texture and continuity, and praiseworthy for those entirely significant accomplishments, it is nonetheless quite expensive for what it offers.
