(From 2001 Vintage) Dutton Ranch. Reminiscent of wines from the northern Rhone area, this gamy, smoky effort is a bit tight with fruit but is balanced well and never heads to the fat, ripe end of the Syrah spectrum. There are hints of blueberries and black pepper in the mix as well, and if the wine could use a bit more stuffing overall, it nonetheless is a very presentable Syrah for drinking over the next few years.
