2002 Dominus Napanook Red

Wine Description

In 1996, Christian Moueix first released Napanook, a wine specifically intended to be enjoyed in its younger years. Eight years later, Napanook has achieved near legendary status in Yountville with its blend of four varietals from vineyard lots chosen for their finesse, lively fruit and subtle tannins. Harmonious in balance, this wine is truly a pleasure to drink.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
By Dominus Estate. 68% Cabernet Sauvignon; 13% Cabernet Franc; 11% Merlot; 7% Petit Verdot; 1% Malbec. There is more than a small family resemblance between this stolid, very tannic, vaguely woodsy wine and its big brother from Dominus, but as the latter offers glimmers of fruit at its heart, this one comes up astringent, bitter and overly dry.

Aromas of black fruits, licorice, cedar, leather and bitter chocolate, with a suggestion of dehydrated berries. Intense flavors of black cherry, fresh herbs and licorice, framed by firm acids. Could use a bit more sweetness of fruit. Finishes with powerful spine and a hint of unabsorbed acidity.
