Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines9% Merlot. A long time ago, this combination of vineyard and vintner was the toast of the town, but this year's version is more like an economy car rather than the luxury model that its price would suggest. It is ripe, fairly rounded and enriched by some very nice oak, but it is frugal with fruit and lacks for both depth and ambition.
