(2000 Vintage) CASK 23, our proprietary bottling produced only in particularly meritorious vintages, is drawn entirely from S.L.V. and FAY, our estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District. Over the years, we’ve learned that certain blocks and sub-blocks within these properties consistently yield grapes of exceptional quality. The choice of which grapes will go into CASK 23 is far from automatic, however. Even within sub-blocks of proven greatness, the quality of fruit varies from year to year and from vine to v...

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(1999 Vintage) 89 Points/96 Points How do you spell controversial? With one of the few split scores ever given by Connoisseurs' Guide. The dissenting voice questions whether the higher alcohol and the slight bit of stalkiness at the edges wi...
Wine & Spirits(1998 Vintage) Warren Winiarski designed Cask 23 as a blend of Fay and SLV, vineyards with two kinds of soil: Therersquo;s a wash of loam at the base of the hills, and volcanic rock up on the ridges. Winiarski thinks of this Cabernet Sauvignon as a blend of ldquo;water blocksrdquo; (loam soils giving smooth, supple character), and ldquo;fire blocksrdquo; (volcanic soils providing a more intensity, fiery side). In this rsquo;98, you can practically smell the astringency in the aroma, the blackness of plum skin, the deep chocolate texture of the tannins all seeming to create a black veil to the richness of the wine. Nothing is revealed, and yet the wine is immensely generous. To gain access to the wine, yoursquo;ll probably need to wait a decade.
