Winemaker's Notes

(From 1997 Vintage) The vineyard-lots of grapes selected as reserve candidates receive special attention throughout winemaking and aging. We hand-harvested the grapes into small bins and brought them to the winery for destemming and light crushing. The wine was fermented with a combination of cultured and native yeasts for greater complexity. After an average of 32 days extended skin contact to naturally soften tannins and enhance varietal character, the wine was gently pressed and transferred to 60 gallon, chateau-style French oak barrels. In barrel, the wine completed an extended (70% native) malolactic read more...fermentation for softness and depth. To achieve natural clarity, we gently racked the wine barrel-to-barrel five times during 17 ½ months of aging. The wine was bottled unfiltered to fully retain the vibrant aromas and rich, powerful flavors. (75% new French oak; balance once-used barrels.) (hide)

    (From 1997 Vintage) Simply one of the best wines in the world. On a par with the first growths of Bordeaux; capable of long term cellaring but also enjoyable now, bursting with dark berry fruit. Although packed with blackberry, cassis and spice, this wine has a beautifully pure mineral component that lifts the wine on your palate, making it seem simultaneously chewy and silky at the same time. 38% of this vintage is made with grapes from the one of the jewels of Napa mdash; the To Kalon Vineyard.

    (From 1997 Vintage) Sweetened up with the lovely, decidedly creamy oak that is a Mondavi hallmark, this bright, young Cabernet displays plenty of fruity concentration and suggests raspberries and a touch of currants in both scent and taste. Its rounded, somewhat juicy flavors are surprisingly accessible now, and it would seem that no more than three or four years of age are needed to bring this one to its polished best.
