(From 2009 Vintage)
The first winery built in the Napa Valley following the repeal of Prohibition, Merryvale is located in the heart of America’s premier wine region. A decade ago, the Merryvale operation was purchased by Jack Schlatter and family, with son, Rene, serving as company president. After the Schlatter family bought it, they renovated the facility and started making wine under two labels: Merryvale and Starmont. Past wine makers include Ric Forman, succeeded by Bob Levy, who currently runs a couple of winemaking operations for Harlan. Following the tradition of great wine makers is Sean Foster as Merryvale’s senior winemaker, and is joined by winemaker Graham Wehmeier.
Sister winery Starmont, is located on the historic Stanly Ranch in Carneros where John Stanly planted one of the first vineyards in Carneros in 1872. This green winery is powered by the sun.
The 2009 vintage reds are showing excellent quality and ripeness at slightly lower alcohol levels. Our 2009 Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon is approachable now and should be consumed within 8 years of the vintage.
76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11 % Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec
(From 2010 Vintage) Our vintage is a dark red in color, with black and purple hues. Aromas of dark cherry, red currant, boysenberry and graphite with background baking spices (clove, allspice) and dried sage. Bright fruit, flavors of currant, berries and cherry, along with subtle toasty oak, are all framed by well balanced acidity and well resolved tannins. The finish is medium length, showing great structure with well integrated and resolved tannins.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 2003 Vintage) The least of the Merryvale 2003s is beset by dried forest, old wood and vaguely leathery notes that all but submerge sweeter scents of cherries and oak in the nose. The wine has a rounded feel at entry but is thin in flavor despite being full in body and high in ripeness. Pass it by.
Critics Challenge(From 2003 Vintage) Rating: Critics Challenge 2006 Gold - As reviewed by Critics Challenge on 05/01/06. Pure but powerful with deep, dark fruit notes and ripe tannins. Michael Franz

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 2004 Vintage) 12% Merlot. This straightforward offering comes with few bells or whistles, but it delivers honest Cabernet fruit and a nice bit of balanced oak spice. It is medium-full-bodied and fairly well-balanced even if toughening up just a touch in the latter-going, and it will benefit by a few years of smoothing while serving as a foil to hearty roasts early on.
