2000 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay Napa Valley

Winemaker's Notes

It has our typical bright green-gold color, obviously not heavily oaked or malolactic styled. The nose is dominated by intense green apple. The palate follows the fruit aroma with the green apple and some melon flavors, but its quite crisp and that is directly attributed to the cool vintage. The overall texture is very crisp and clean.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
(From 2003 Vintage) Limited fruit and a smattering of oak emerge only slowly in the lean, lightly citric aromas of this clean, but small-scaled offering, and its sparse, slightly angular, mildly chalky flavors follow suit. If certainly serviceable with lighter seafoods, it lacks for richness and depth, and we expect a good deal more from a wine of this stature and price and from this winery.
  • Decanter
(From 2003 Vintage) Rating: 0/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. Lively acidity with plenty of minerality and a really voluptuous texture. The Chardonnay fruit shines through. Drink up to 2008-09.

  • Decanter
(From 2003 Vintage) Rating: 4/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. Blackcurrant, elegant use of oak. Very rich, voluptuous, concentrated, dense tannins. A touch austere, which is quite welcome. Very good length. Built to last. Drink 2012-17.
