  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
(2005 Vintage) This nicely filled wine is fairly forthright in its ripeness and comes just a bit closer to the Californian model as far as flesh and fat are concerned. After a very rich start, it firms up and tightens a touch in the latter going, and ample tannins arrive to provide the right structural grip to its nicely sustained finish. While there are aspects about it that might encourage early drinking, this one will not be at its best for six to ten years.

(2005 Vintage) Saturated ruby-red. Deeply pitched aromas of black cherry, currant and coffee. Sweet, silky and full, but with lovely ripe acidity to frame the dense black fruit, mocha and mineral flavors. Showing a glossy aspect to its fruit that is exhilarating, even if this deep, fairly tannic wine is a bit sullen at present, despite showing excellent back-end breadth. This is a full 13.5% alcohol; the petit verdot component reached 14.5% potential alcohol in 2005, said Cuvelier, who describes 2005 as "a year...

(2001 Vintage) Rating: 4/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. Big, deep colour that sticks to the glass. Slightly tanky and firm nose, lots of ripe cassis fruit but also quite high acidity. Very good extraction and ripeness, needs time to settle down. (Tasted en primeur)

(2007 Vintage) Saturated ruby-red color. Reticent nose hints at medicinal black cherry, blueberry and camphor. Offers good texture and sweetness but seems a bit diffuse and lacking in structure today, with a rather high-pH feel and an impression of lowish acidity for this wine. Finishes with slightly dusty tannins and an easygoing character. A bit inexpressive and lacking in energy today; perhaps I caught it in an awkward stage.

(2004 Vintage) Bright ruby-red. Very expressive nose offers redcurrant, tobacco, flowers and nutty oak. Supple, silky and pliant but with good energy to its red fruit and floral flavors. Finishes with broad, sweet tannins and a lingering note of tobacco. This remains quite open and appears to be evolving very much like the 2001.
