(From 2010 Vintage) Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish.
Good full medium ruby. Subdued, slightly roasted nose combines cassis, cherry and chocolate mint. Chocolatey-sweet but less deep and expressive than the '02 and '01. Offers good currant and cherry fla...
Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 2002 Vintage) Lovely aromas of cassis and rich oak set the stage for the solid, well-filled flavors that follow, and amidst the wine's ongoing themes of blackcurrants lie glimmers of graphite, briar and loam. Medium-full-bodied, well-ripened and fairly solid in feel, it is at once both supple and still slightly edgy with acids and tannins meeting up at the finish. Its last-minute toughness is easily forgiven as a failing of mere youth, and five or six years of patience will allow it to smooth and to knit more ...
Decanter(From 2001 Vintage) Rating: 4/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. Big, deep colour that sticks to the glass. Slightly tanky and firm nose, lots of ripe cassis fruit but also quite high acidity. Very good extraction and ripeness, needs time to settle down. (Tasted en primeur)
Robert Parker(From 2008 Vintage) "One of the finest over-achieving efforts in this vintage as well as a “best buy” for a top-flight St.-Julien, this 2008 is an irresistible success. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple color, lots of unctuosity and a boatload of sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, smoke and oak. Full-bodied, remarkably concentrated and stunningly pure and textured, this sensational wine is already drinking well, and will be even better with 2-3 years of cellaring. It should last...
Decanter(From 1961 Vintage) Rating: 0/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. Fairly deep mature red; light sweet cedary nose, mature, has charm, smoky bacon aromas; lean, a hint of oxidation, concentrated, smoky, quite elegant but not very complex, bacony, attractive, unlikely to improve further; good length.
Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 2003 Vintage) Another wine from St. Julien that caught our attention, this one is deep, ripe, curranty and full of Cabernet flavor. We also like Chateau Branaire-Ducru and Chateau Talbot from the same commune. The Cabernet based wines from the communes north of Bordeaux seemed to have fared extremely well. This wine and Branaire-Ducru rate 90 points and up while the Talbot should be a reasonable value, if its price does not escalate, in the 88-90 point range
