1999 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Private Selection Central Coast

Winemaker's Notes

Velvety flavors, full of blackberries, currants and warm spices highlight our Coastal Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes were harvested from vineyards in Californias North Coast appellation. The complex interplay of aromas and flavors in the wine come from these vineyards which are rooted in varied soils. Winemaker Ken Shyvers carefully selects the grapes for our Cabernet to ensure rich, ripe character with soft tannins. This means that you will be enjoying a very approachable wine.

Drank the bottle 3/2011. Good nose but the finish went away really quick. I think the wine was to old and should have been drunk 5 or 6 years ago.

(From 2003 Vintage) Mondavi's basic Cabernet starts out well enough with attractive aromas of ripe cherries and fairly rich oak, but its simple flavors run afoul of blunting tannins, and its fundamental fruit is lost to tongue-drying astringency. In need of some five or more years of softening, it never finds a sufficiently fruity voice to convince us that it will age into beauty.
