1999 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Proprietary Red

Wine Description

(From 2005 Vintage) The 2005 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red, a vibrant, deeply colored wine, offers a nose complex in aromas of crème de cassis, tobacco, dark chocolate, dark fruit, graphite and spice. The extraordinary structure of this wine encompasses a palate that is full-bodied and rich, offering excellent acidity and finely grained tannins. The length is impeccable and lasts seemingly for minutes after the last swallow. A truly irresistible wine to try now but certainly one that should also hold for decades.

Winemaker's Notes

(From 1996 Vintage) This wine shares some of the chocolatey characteristics of the two Merlot vintages, but there is more cassis liqueur, blackberries, blueberries, and pain grille (toast) notes in this lavishly rich, flamboyant proprietary red.Full-bodied, marvelously concentrated and extremely well-balanced, this wine's acidity, tannin, and high alcohol are completely buried beneath the complex fruit and extract of this profound offering.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
Although it may not satisfy those seeking keenly defined fruit, this big, broad-beamed offering has richness and substance to spare, and its many-layered flavors reveal a healthy dose of ripe black cherries, lavish oak, distinct elements of chocolate and a careful hint of complexing herbaceousness. Nuance, however, is not its forte, and its ample underpinning of tannin reminds that it is a wine meant for extended keeping and service with hearty, full-flavored foods.
