1999 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Proprietary Red

Wine Description

(From 2010 Vintage) This wine's stunning intensity begins with its inky hue. Aromas of super ripe cassis, blueberry, blackberry and fig are under- scored by worn leather, anise and shiso mint. On the palate, the entry is rich and viscous, leading to plush, dusty tannins and fetching flavors of dark, ripe berries, figs and chocolate. Warm baking spice balances minerality on the finish, inviting taste after taste of this exceptionally compelling blend.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
Although it may not satisfy those seeking keenly defined fruit, this big, broad-beamed offering has richness and substance to spare, and its many-layered flavors reveal a healthy dose of ripe black cherries, lavish oak, distinct elements of chocolate and a careful hint of complexing herbaceousness. Nuance, however, is not its forte, and its ample underpinning of tannin reminds that it is a wine meant for extended keeping and service with hearty, full-flavored foods.
