The 2005 vintage features luscious aromas of ripe citrus, pear, and honeysuckle. A noticeable yeasty brioche and butterscotch aroma lures you in for the first sip. Slight toasted almond characters add to the layers in the mouth with pear, taffy apple, and citrus flavors. An excellent balance of toast and rich fruit flavors is the hallmark of this vintage brut. It is the perfect apéritif or first-course accompaniment to a potato leek purée drizzled over curly endive with a dash of truffled caviar.
(From 2001 Vintage) The 2001 J Brut extended tirage bottling has aromas of bright citrus, Bosc pear and light honeysuckle, along with more noticeable yeast tones of brioche. Slight nutty and toasty characters join in, lending a nice balance to the fruit. Pear and citrus notes continue through on the palate, joined by hints of gingersnap. Complex toasty aromas and flavors balance beautifully with a long and lingering citrus finish. Firm structure and creamy qualities of this wine make it a wonderful apéritif as well as a good pairing for richer dishes.

It’s unusual for a sparkling wine house to hold back their basic vintage brut this long, but J did, and consumers benefit. The wine has some bottle age, and is softly picking up nutty, dried fruit, floral and yeasty notes. Enormously complex, it should continue to develop for many years.
