(2003 Vintage) A sleeper of the vintage, the dense blue/purple-colored 2003 Lafon-Rochet exhibits plenty of blackberry, cassis and graphite along with a touch of toasty new oak. The wine is more backward than expected, but it possesses full-bodied, concentrated flavors as well as good elegance, purity, and overall equilibrium. This is a long-distance runner.
Wine & SpiritsThe 1989 Lafon-Rochet may ultimately eclipse the tannic, brawny, ageworthy 1986. Certainly it will have more charm and appeal in its youth than the 1986. Dark ruby, with an intense bouquet of overripe cassis, this chewy, well-endowed, full-bodied wine is reminiscent of the excellent 1970. Opulent as well as tannic, it may justify an outstanding rating in a decade. It is a traditionally made, surprisingly big wine. Anticipated maturity: 1996-2015.
