International Wine Cellar(1998 Vintage) Rating: 91(+?) - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 99, November/December 2001. ($110; from a vineyard planted in 1945 on chalky soil) Bright ruby. Floral, minerally flavors of red cherry, violet, dark chocolate, mustard seed and fresh herbs. Penetrating, tightly wound flavors of red cherry and red raspberry; a classy but very backward wine, aromatically precise but very difficult to taste today. Austere and subtly long on the finish. I suspect this highly perfumed Rioja will ultimately match the '98 Grandes Anades in quality.
Robert Parker(2001 Vintage) El Pison is a 100% Tempranillo cuvee produced from a single vineyard planted in 1945. The soil is pure limestone, yields are a lowly 18-22 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is aged for 18-24 months in French oak. The potentially perfect 2001 El Pison has more of everything. While it possesses an extraordinary flavor intensity, it remains light on its feet.
