Winemaker's Notes

The Grgich Hills Zinfandel, which normally carries a "Sonoma County" appellation, is a little different this year. Due to the acquisition of some prime Napa Valley Zinfandel grapes from the Calistoga region, we were able to produce a 50/50 blend of two counties. Both of the Grgich Hills efforts are built along fairly firm lines, but whereas its pricey partner convinces in fruit, this comparatively stark wine lacks clear definition while coming up short on requisite flesh. Hard and drying with a rush of last-minute tannin, it needs lengthy aging and a full measure of luck to grow into beauty.
