Winemaker's Notes

The grapes for this wine were grown in the cool southern end of Napa Valley. In ZD's traditional style, the two vineyards involved in the blend were fermented in their individual vineyard lots in 50-60 gallon American oak barrels. The primary fermentation was very long and slow due to the frigid temperature of ZD's specially designed Chardonnay room. Cool barrel fermentation ensured 6-8 weeks of yeast swirling throughout the fermenting juice giving the final wine richness and complexity. In ZD's ...

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
    (From 2004 Vintage) Clean, moderately fruity and of middling depth in its green apple and roasted vanilla bean aromas, this wine is surprisingly quiet in the mouth and never fully delivers on the mild but evident fruit suggestions of the nose. It is reasonably well-balanced but does allow its acidity to stick out a bit too much in the firm, crisp and bitter-edged, woody finish.

    (From 2007 Vintage) Idiosyncratic smells of pineapple and sweet coconut direct this one on a path all its own, and, although fairly ripe and fleshy in feel, the wine never quite keys of classic Chardonnay fruit in its slightly juicy, vaguely tropical flavors. It is oddly confected to be sure, but it should find success as a foil to the likes of sweetly sauced chicken.
