Clear yellow straw, opalescent; honey, orange blossom, crème caramel, pear and apricot, spicy apple aromas; rich mouthful of ripe peaches and pear, smooth and lingering on the finish with a note of vanilla and butterscotch. The vines for these grapes eke out an existence on a small dry-farmed hillside block just above the winery.
Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(1999 Vintage) Simply spilling over with rich oak spice, ripe fruit and close to pungent toastiness in the nose, this unrestrained display of all-out winemaking is every bit as big, fat and unsubtle in flavor as promised. Late-arriving acidity counters the wine's tendencies to corpulence, and the slightly edgy finish gets a little coarse and overly keyed on oak. Fans of blockbuster Chardonnays will be more than happy here, but another year of softening should make a good thing even better.
