(James Laube, The Wine Spectator ) "The 1997 Proprietary Red Wine flirts with perfection. This wine shares some of the chocolatey characteristics of the two Merlot vintages, but there is more cassis liqueur, blackberries, blueberries, and pain grille (toast) notes in this lavishly rich, flamboyant proprietary red. The wine's flavors lingered for 42 seconds on the palate. Full-bodied, marvelously concentrated and extremely well-balanced, this wine's acidity, tannin, and high alcohol are completely buried beneath the complex fruit and extract of this profound offering. I remember shaking my head in disbelief at the quality of this wine." 98 (Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate) Availability: The 1997 Pahlmeyer Red will be available nationally and internationally through fine restaurants and retail shops as of October 1, 2000. Expert Reviews
  • International Wine Cellar
(1997 Vintage) Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 90, May/June 2000. Very saturated black ruby to the rim. Dark aromas of cassis, black raspberry, licorice, maple syrup, shoe polish and flowers. Superripe and compellingly layered and deep; as thick and sweet as the merlot but more tactile, with a stronger impression of acidity and structure and superb flavor definition. Thoroughly ripe, noble tannins reach the entire palate. Pahlmeyer still shows a slight preference for his cabernet sauvignon-based blend. "The merlot, after all, used to be the leftover juice, the stuff that didn't go into the red blend," he explained.
