1997 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Costa Russi

Wine Description

Very good deep red ruby. Black cherry, licorice and a hint of menthol on the nose. Sweet and deceptively tasteable today. Shows more complexity and personality than the normale, as well as more size and structure. Finishes with even, tongue dusting tannins.

Winemaker's Notes

Drinking wonderfully at the moment, but will improve further with age. Aromas of berry, mint, roses and violets follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate, with round, velvety tannins and a ripe fruit aftertaste. Drink now through 2010.

"The opaque ruby/purple-colored 1997 Costa Russi (10,000 bottles produced) displays a striking bouquet of blackberry and cherry fruit intermixed with espresso and wood scents. Typically the most internationally-styled Gaja offering, the 1997 comes across as a Nebbiolo on steroids. Full-bodied, gorgeously pure and symmetrical, it should be at its best between 2002-2025."

Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by Piedmont Report in Issue 1, December 2004 Dark ruby in color. Clearly the most approachable of the wines, the Costa Russi is a luscious and intense wine showing generous flavors of ripe dark cherries, toasted oak, roasted espresso beans, cassis, tar, licorice, mint, and truffles.
