Winemaker's Notes

"Medium-full colour. Depth and class here. Quite Medoc-y. Still youthful. Fullish. Quite tannic but very good tannins. Backward but splendidly promising. Ripe and concentrated and profound. Very fine." (Clive Coates - The Vine - 01-Jan-1999)

Very good deep red-ruby. Sweet, highly expressive aromas of redcurrant, hot stones, roasted plum, woodsmoke and tobacco. Fuller and more textured in the middle palate, with a chewy, tactile mouth feel...

Good full red. Pungent redcurrant, mineral, plum, coffee and smoke aromas. Penetrating, firm, and tightly wound, with excellent intensity and delineation of flavor; hiding its density today. Very long...

(From 1975 Vintage) I have a thing about well aged La Mission. I love the combination of dark fruit with flavors of cedar and tobacco. But on the night, this wine had more aromatics and showed aged fruit dominated by the expected notes of earth, cedar, leather and tobacco. It is well-balanced and ends in a medium to long finish, but it is also more mature than other bottles I have had. And to make matters worse, the Gemello stole its limelight, by being more Graves than the Graves itself. 93 points.

(From 1971 Vintage) Rating: 0/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. Deep red, some signs of maturity; lovely elegant cedary nose, intense and minty; soft, ripe, lush, sumptuous texture, light tannin, well balanced, charcoal, hint of chocolate; good length.

(From 1992 Vintage) Rating: 4/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. Dark ruby, with lovely, creamy, ripe nose of blackcurrants and oak. Sweet oak and fruit on the palate with good balance. Classy!

(From 2000 Vintage) "The 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion is certainly one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage. Its performance was off-the-charts in two separate tastings for this report. Deep blue/purple, with a nose of creme de cassis, floral scents, graphite, and subtle smoke, the wine is pure, deep, sumptuously textured, full-bodied, powerful (although certainly not at the power level of the amazing 2009). This wine certainly transcends its 13% natural alcohol and has the same level of concentration found i...
