(2013 Vintage) #65 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2015
The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon has been Chappellet's flagship wine for more than three decades. It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley; full of structure and aging potential, yet seductively forward in its concentrated varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavorful grapes. Crop thinning allows for full, even ripening and further elevates flavor complexity.
Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot
Wine Spectator(2002 Vintage) "Elegantly styled with a wonderful sense of balance, it offers a complex core of currant, anise, sage and a splash of vanilla and mocha, finishing with ripe, fine-grained tannins that flex their muscles on the finish. Best from 2006 through 2012."
Wine & Spirits(2001 Vintage) This is the winery's basic Cabernet, but there's nothing common about it. It's dry and complex and moderately ageworthy, a hillside Cabernet that revels in its plush, firm tannins and ripe fruit. There's a minerality that seems to come from the soil, with expressive blackberry, currant, chocolate and anise flavors. Really fine now after a decant, and should develop through this decade.
