Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Wine Details

Wine Description

(1993 Vintage)

A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, this wine is made by winemaker/consultant Heidi Barrett. Before his death, Gustav Dalla Valle also provided considerable input to this vintage. Availability is next to impossible, as there were only 135 cases of the 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon made.

97 Points, Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate:

"The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon is a remarkable wine, not dissimilar from the 1992. The 1993 reveals an opaque purple color, as well as a rich, jammy, pure nose of blackcurrant/cassis fruit intertwined with scents of minerals and high quality, spicy oak. The wine offers a cascade of lavishly rich, opulently textured, super-extracted fruit that is beautifully buttressed by oak and sweet tannin. Remarkably long, pure, and rich, this is a compelling Cabernet Sauvignon with no hard edges. Perfectly balanced, marvelously concentrated, and exciting, look for this wine to drink well young, but keep for 25 years." (Dec. 1996)

91 Points, Wine Spectator:

"Dark, ripe, intense and concentrated, with lots of currant, earth, leather and anise flavors. Comes across as a rustic, concentrated style with a chewy core of flavors. Finishes with a dry tannic edge and gritty tannins. Not as plush as the 1992, but still packs a wallop." (12/31/1996)

(2003 Vintage) Good dark red-ruby. Distinctly rocky, mineral-driven aromas of redcurrant and leather. Juicy, suave and delineated, with lovely acid spine and a strong spice character. Not a dense or fleshy wine but nicely balanced, pure and long on personality. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and lovely finesse.

(2004 Vintage) Good deep ruby-red. Deeper, sweeter aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, mocha, smoke and minerals. Rich and suave in the mouth; fuller and considerably smoother than the 2003. This boasts lovely sweetness and superb refinement, as well as more stuffing to support its nutty oak than the leaner 2003 possesses. There's nothing astringent about this. The blend includes just 6% merlot and 2% cab franc.
