Harlan Estate The Maiden

Wine Description

Very dense, ruby-red color. Though subdued at first, with some airing it displays notes of roasted coffee, charcoal, and blackberry against a background of sweet, toasty notes. Very ripe impression with good concentration and density. The entry on the palate is at once dense, fleshy, exuberant, and displays a high level of fine-grained, supple tannins that will certainly contribute to its textural interest and harmony for many years.

(2000 Vintage) Full medium ruby. Spicy, brooding aromas of black- and redcurrant, licorice, mocha and toasty oak. Impressively ripe and rich; very backward yet conveys an impression of low acidity. Finishes firm but with thoroughly lush tannins.

(2002 Vintage) Good full ruby-red. Superripe aromas of sweet, sappy berries; not roasted. Lush, sweet and sappy, with compelling freshness and depth of sappy fruit. This has terrific early appeal as well as a firm structure to support further development in bottle. Finishes with big, chewy, tongue-dusting tannins and superb lingering sweetness of dark berry fruit. The best Maiden vintage yet.
