Winemaker's Notes

(From 2007 Vintage) This historic family-owned estate is named after its founder Cesare Pio, who established the business in 1881. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piemonte region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding hills provide a handful of ideal exposures for grape growing with unique micro-climates. The confluence of cold Alpine air with warm maritime moisture regularly creates a misty glow, or ‘nebbia’, over these foothills, hence Nebbiolo, the great red variety of the region. The Dolcetto grapes are grown in selected vineyards around the village of Treiso, Monforte read more...d’Alba, Serralunga and Madonna Como. The exact timing of the harvest is extremely important for all young wines, and Dolcetto is no exception. The goal is maximum ripeness, but not over-ripeness, which would cause the grapes to lose their freshness and liveliness. Only the best bunches are selected so as not to mar the fruitiness and delicate youth of the wine. Generally, the harvest occurs in the last week of September. This 100% Dolcetto is an ntense ruby red colour with glossy purple hues. This is an intense, distinct and delicately grapey ripe, with a hint of raspberry and pepper. The palate is dry, supple and lively, with red currant and blueberry overtones. (hide)
