Wine Description

(1998 Vintage) Vineyards: Merlot is grown on both of our Estate vineyards. At our Hillview Vineyard, south of Yountville, 10 acres were planted in 1974. Located mid-valley at the base of the western hills, this vineyard is well protected from the frost and wind that can be found in other regions of the valley. At our Oakville vineyards we have an additional 24 acres of Merlot, some of which was planted on resistant rootstock adjacent to our Reserve Cabernet block beginning in 1992. This acreage came into full production with the 1997 harvest. Harvest: Average Sugar: 24.1 Brix Acid: 0.55 g/100ml pH: 3.71 Pick dates: 9/22 to 10/19/99 Fermentation and Aging: Fermentation was carried out over a seven day period in small, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at an average temperature of 80 F. After pressing and settling, the wine was transferred to small French oak barrels (50% new) for aging. The sweet vanilla character derived from 18 months in the barrels blends well with the blueberry and strawberry flavors and aromas of the wine. Finished Wine: Bottling Date: August, 2001 Sizes: 750 ml, 1.5L, 3.0L, 6.0L 100% Napa Valley 100% Extate Grown, Produced & Bottled 100% Merlot (78% Oakville, 22% Yountville) Total Acidity: 0.61 g/100m pH: 3.54 Alcohol: 13.9% by volume Winemaker Notes: Historically, Merlot was bottled only when enough remained after blending with our Cabernet Sauvignon. With our newer vineyards finally coming on-stream we are now able to consistently produce a reasonable quantity to bottle. You will find that this Merlot is made in a full, rich, robust style that can continue to age gracefully for 5-10 years. (hide)
