(From 1993 Vintage) Deep garnet-brick colour. Fragrant aromas of dried cranberries, prunes, cinnamon and cumin giving way to subtler earthy notes of leather and tar. A lot of discernable fruit remains on the palate framed by crisp acidity and a medium level of grainy tannins. Very long, layered finish.
Cooler-than-normal winter weather led to a late bud break. Bloom and berry set were affected by cool temperatures and rain in late May, resulting in a reduced crop. Normal summer temperatures were followed by ideal harvest conditions. Wines are aromatic, rich, and resilient.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines(From 1998 Vintage) A very pleasant wine to be sure, this one wins the day with its ripe cherry and proper cassis aromas buttressed by pushy oak. A supple rounded entry leads to medium-depth, balanced, slightly tannin-toughened flavors, and, once again, oak accents fill out the small gaps in its young fruit. If rising above the vintage in both texture and continuity, and praiseworthy for those entirely significant accomplishments, it is nonetheless quite expensive for what it offers.
