1986 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Wine Description

(From 2007 Vintage)

On the palate, the wine reflects the very expressive terroir of the To Kalon Vineyard with ripe blue and black fruits—mineral-laced dark berries and powerful, integrated tannins for which this vineyard is known. The lush aromatics and well developed flavors are wrapped in firm, velvety tannins, giving the wine an exceedingly long, aristocratic finish.

"The full-bodied, powerful, pure 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is another outstanding effort revealing notes of spring flowers, toasty oak, creme de cassis, licorice, and graphite. One would have to go back to the 1990, 1991, 2001, or 2002 to find a Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve this impressive. The 2007 should evolve for 20-25 years." - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate - September 2010
95 Points

"A wonderful expression of stylish Cabernet that's ripe, fleshy, complex and layered, highlighting ripe currant, wild berry and blueberry, with touches of cedar and cigar box. The flavors gain traction on the finish. Drink now through 2022. " Wine Spectator - September 2010

(From 2001 Vintage) Simply one of the best wines in the world. On a par with the first growths of Bordeaux; capable of long term cellaring but also enjoyable now, bursting with dark berry fruit. Although packed with blackberry, cassis and spice, this wine has a beautifully pure mineral component that lifts the wine on your palate, making it seem simultaneously chewy and silky at the same time. 38% of this vintage is made with grapes from the one of the jewels of Napa mdash; the To Kalon Vineyard.

(From 2002 Vintage) 7% Merlot; 6%Cabernet Franc; 2% Petit Verdot; 2% Malbec. Here is a beautifully made wine that reminds that Cabernet is and should not be defined solely by ripeness and hard-charging oak, for, while it may have plenty of each, it shows exceptional balance and genuine finesse, and it is defined first and last by its precise and unwavering curranty fruit. It is wine with plenty of potential, its polish and poise notwithstanding, and it deserves at least a four or five years in the cellar in which to...
