1985 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select Stags Leap District

Winemaker's Notes

(From 2010 Vintage) This is classic Cabernet Sauvignon from our rugged hillsides, exuding dramatic, rich color, high-toned, elegant aromas and full, refined flavors of dark cherry, cassis, espresso, sweet vanilla and wet earth with enticing rose pedal, cranberry, blueberry, oregano and sage. The lush, mouthfilling complexity in your glass is completed with ripe, smooth-textured tannins and a persistent finish that won’t let go.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
The Cabernets of 1985 came with high expectations and were praised by many, ourselves included, for their firmness and ageworthy structures. As it turns, too few really blossomed and too many are as rigid now as they were in there youths. This textbook 1985 wine is very much built in a tighter, arguably refined style, and while still firm at the edges, it needs to be drunk up soon. Originally reviewed at **.
