Winemaker's Notes

(From 2005 Vintage) Sweet wines are in unison with reds. This year, cold nights of august and glorious sun of September give a very complex vintage. The wine is great, complex, and exuberant. We feel very fine aromas of crystallized orange, exotic, mentholated, and few notes of ginger. The noble rot was very beautiful this vintage, the botrytis has a splendid purity. The finale taste is explosive, honeyed, with spices and so on…

(From 2001 Vintage) Bordeaux's sweet wines shared the limelight in the region's legendary 2005 vintage. many châteaus, like Guiraud, long under the direction of Xavier Planty, produced their best wine ever. During the harvest, grape pickers passed painstakingly through the estate's 210 acres of 35-year-old Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc vineyards, selecting only grapes affected by botrytis. By the harvest's end, each acre yielded only enough grapes for 54 cases of wine, with about 20 percent of that set aside for the estate's second label.
  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
(From 2005 Vintage) No quibbles here. This is a concentrated, fairly complex offering whose pear syrup, pineapple, roasted nuts, coconutty aromas may be the slightest bit unusual but are every bit inviting. Juicy and rich in flavor with more than a touch of honey noted, the wine has plenty of underlying acidity that helps make its youthfully sugary flavors attractive even now but which also guarantees that this lush wine has a second decade and possibly more in its future.
