(1996 Vintage) 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot
Average vine age is 37 years. In order to retain the advantage of older vines, the renewal of the vines is not done in lots, but periodically throughout the vineyard. Each vine that is replaced is identified by a yellow plastic ring, making them easily identifiable so they can be harvested before the main harvest in order to avoid any confusion. This isolation of the young vines continues for 8 years. The 124 acres produce around 20,000 cases.
International Wine CellarSaturated dark red. Liqueur-like aromas of red berries, rose petal, mocha, roast coffee and animal fur; really compelling retention of fruit. Thick and powerful but still rather backward, with an edge of acidity and a cool whiff of menthol adding to the impression of structure. Quite powerful on the back end. Can't match the greatest vintages of this wine for sheer otherworldly extract and concentration, but this is a superb vintage for Latour a Pomerol, probably the best since '61.
DecanterRating: 0/5 - As reviewed by Decanter. Very deep red; sweet rich oaky nose, very ripe and opulent; sweet, silky, lush, concentrated, spicy, complex and voluptuous; good length.
