WINEMAKER'S NOTE
The grapes for this Pinot Noir were grown in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley viticultural appellation. The Russian River empties into the Pacific Ocean and serves as a channel for the cool ocean fog to move inland from the coast. Kenwood produces its Russian River blend from vineyards located off River Road, where the soil combined with the ocean's cooling influence creates the ideal conditions for growing Pinot Noir. Sixty-two percent of the grapes were grown on estate vineyards. A small amount of Syrah was added to the final blend to supply additional body and complexity. The 2009 growing season began with a dry spring followed by a temperate summer. The vintage had low yields but produced excellent grapes. The vines were harvested in September and early October, with ten percent of the harvest undergoing whole-berry fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the fruity flavors of the grape. The wine was then aged in newer French oak barrels for 11 months. This vintage of our Pinot Noir serves up a delicious array of cherry and fresh fruit flavors, combined with spicy notes and smooth tannins that make for an exceptionally enjoyable wine.
