"A 90/10 blend of Shiraz and Cabernet. Inky ruby. Smoky, deep aromas of spicy black and blue fruits, espresso and lively licorice. Chewy bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors are firmed by chunky tannins and given bite by a late mineral quality. Gains power and structure with air but retains sweetness and clarity. This is pretty serious." -IWC "Lush in texture, but subtle in flavor, with black olive and meat notes adding interest to the dark berry and licorice flavors, lingering with finesse on...

There are 9,000 cases of the 2005 Explorateur Old Vines Shiraz (with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend). It was aged for 12 months in French oak and bottled unfiltered. Purple-colored, it displays reticent aromas of toast, scorched earth, tar, blueberry, and blackberry. Ripe and sweet, with some elegance, it has good depth, moderate tannin, and a medium-long finish. Give it 3-4 years in the cellar and drink it through 2020.

winemaker's notes: Classic ripe Shiraz that is handpicked from old Shiraz Vines based in the north of the Barossa Valley. The grapes are double-sorted – by bunch and then by grape - on arrival at the winery and, after fermentation, aged in French oak for a year. Purple in color with a round, enveloping taste. critical acclaim: "Has abundant black cherry and blackberry fruit with spicy components; good oak and tannin handling; a nice twist of acidity to freshen the finish." 94 Points James Halliday "A 90/10 blend of shiraz and cabernet) Inky ruby.
