  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
The lighter, less muscular sibling to the wine above, this nicely composed youngster displays notes of minerals, peppery spice, vanilla and smoked meat but is principally keyed on lively, berry-like fruit. Its finishing tannins, while apparent, are not so severe as to preclude early drinking, but a bit of age will go a long way in rounding off its rough edges.

Saturated ruby-red. Cherry, blackberry, Indian spices and cracked pepper on the nose, plus a subtle floral quality. Pliant dark berry flavors are firmed by juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins, picking up candied licorice on the back end. Gains weight with air and finishes with lingering spice and licorice character.
