ShellieFood & Wine: Full-Bodied Red, This plush, chewy Syrah from Mendocino’s Yorkville Highlands pairs gorgeously with spring lamb and fresh herbs. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:Meyer Family Cellars was founded in 1987 by Justin and Bonny Meyer, who achieved fame in creating Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, one of California’s greatest wine successes. Seeking a respite from the limelight to concentrate on family-made wines, the Meyers retreated to the remote Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino. Today run by their son Matt, the estate produces small-lot wines like this Syrah, which was aged four years in barrel to soften its dense, delicious tannins. SMELL IT: White pepper and violets with ripe blueberry fruit. TASTE IT: Rich and plush, with hints of rosemary.SERVE IT: Serve at cool room temperature. PAIR IT: Lamb or veal with freshly picked rosemary, mint or thyme.
