  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
Mondavi's basic Cabernet starts out well enough with attractive aromas of ripe cherries and fairly rich oak, but its simple flavors run afoul of blunting tannins, and its fundamental fruit is lost to tongue-drying astringency. In need of some five or more years of softening, it never finds a sufficiently fruity voice to convince us that it will age into beauty.

Good ruby-red. Currant, mocha, espresso and chocolate on the nose; more deeply pitched than the merlot. Then sweet, full and dense, with ripe flavors of redcurrant, mocha and tobacco. Finishes with substantial but nicely buffered tannins and a slightly roasted quality.
