WINEMAKER'S NOTE
A decreased berry set in May followedd by sunny days and warm July nights brought the smaller-than-average crop of 1996 to maturity in mid-September. Showing deep color, the wines are bold and concentrated, with supple texture, lush flavors, and a smooth, lingering finish.

International Wine CellarRating: 92/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 90, May/June 2000. Bright full ruby-red. Pungent black raspberry, leather, game, chocolate, espresso, pepper and fresh herbs. Juicy, bright and very concentrated, with crunchy currant, tobacco and dark chocolate flavors supported and amplified by a firm spine of acidity. Long on personality. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent length.

jldesignerOn the same meal, we opened a 1989 and a 1996 opus One The 1996 was more interesting and better than the 1989 which has started its decline. Honestly, this bottle should have been opened maybe 5 years earlier. We opened it in 2005.
